The best area to stay in Santorini and the most picturesque town from postcards is Oia. If you want hot weather suitable for swimming and sunbathing the perfect time to visit is from June till September. I visited in the end of August. Of course there were many people because of the cruise ships but most of the time we were able to avoid the crowds by waking up at sunrise and discover places till lunch time. Massive tourist invasion starts around noon. We relaxed by the hotel's pool in the afternoon. So in case you want to explore Santorini without crowds I definitely recommend to stay on the island and not to visit only for a day trip. Discover Oia's beautiful stairways, hidden paths and many Greek orthodox churches. Don't forget your camera because this is one of the best destination in the world for photographers, find the most famous photo stop of Three blue domes of Santorini (starting from Panagia Platsani Church look out at the sea turn right to the main path, go fifty more meters and turn left before jewelry store, go down the stairs and here you are). If you like literature make sure to visit Atlantis Books E.E. or shop for local crafts on main marble street. For art lovers they offer unique paintings on the piece of wood.

Many travelers consider Oia Castle as the best sunset spot in the world. It is free so it is also extremely crowded, if you want to have a seat in front row with unobstructed view you have to come two hours before sunset starts. The crowds are usually gone right after sunset. Stay a bit longer and you will have a chance to see stunning red sky at night.
If you are traveling without children you can also book popular tour of the island’s wineries. Explore vineyards and walk around wine cellars, the trip usually ends with tasting Greek wines and olives during watching mesmerizing sunset in Santo Winery.

Ammoudi Bay is fishing village easily accessible from Oia by foot. Just walk down the 278 steps until you come to the sea. Go to the left, if you are looking out at the sea and follow the little path surrounded by rocks which leads to the best cliff jumping spot in Santorini. You can cool down in shallow water or if you are brave enough swim out to the rock and jump! I recommend to put on your swimsuit under the dress in the hotel because there is nothing like changing rooms.
Take a break for lunch in one of Ammoudi Bay restaurants. They offer fresh seafood grilled right in front of your eyes, it is perfect place to try authentic taverna. The taverna is a small Greek restaurant that serves fresh local cuisine. If you are not fish lover try iconic Greek salad with feta cheese or tzatziki. I don't recommend taking the donkey ride upstairs back to Oia because locals say that some owners are mishandling the donkeys and it’s always good to stay in shape.

Santorini is all about the best sea views. The ideal destination for a romantic getaway as well as a family holiday. Couples, don't hesitate to pick luxurious hotel with a view to caldera and private jacuzzi which will add on romantic atmosphere. The prices of these hotels are very high during peak season and children are price-wise usually considered as adults. If you are traveling as a family focus more on practical things and pick a hotel based on budget, distance to landmarks, breakfast included in price, clean bathroom, big pool and no need to carry suitcases through the pedestrian area or stairs. I think Laokasti Villas ticks these requirements.

You can always enjoy breathtaking caldera views from four towns: Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia. To have it all take the early morning bus or taxi from Oia to Fira and hike back to Oia. With good hiking shoes on you can do a side trip to Skaros Rock from Imerovigli.

Santorini is a volcanic island and summer vacation wouldn't be complete without spending some time at the beach. I booked one night in an apartment right on the volcanic black sand beach Perivolos. Don't miss its glorious sunrise. Due to its far location from tourist side of the island this beach is very calm even when it is equiped with sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars and water sports facilities. Try parasailing or relax on a pool floatie on the sea. History lovers can head over to Akrotiri Archaeological Site.
If you are not a beach person book a boat trip from the old harbor of Fira to the active volcano Nea Kameni which ends with the dip in the Hot Springs.
